Graduate Programs
The structure of the three graduate programs offered at ECE is briefly outlined below. Graduate Course Descriptions provide more detailed information about the substance of these programs.
Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)
The Master of Engineering program best serves students who wish to enhance their knowledge of ECE disciplines beyond the undergraduate level but prefer not to undertake thesis based research. The program consists of a minimum of 12 units of course work plus the ELEC 598 M.Eng. Project of 2 units. In addition to the minimum units of course work stated, the M.Eng. program requires 1 unit for the ELEC 509 Seminar course. Normally, the M.Eng. program can be completed in five consecutive terms.
Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.)
The Master of Applied Science program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing advanced research at the postgraduate level. The program consists of a minimum of 9 units of course work plus the ELEC 599 M.A.Sc. Thesis of 12 units. In addition to the minimum units of course work stated, the M.A.Sc. program requires 1 unit for the ELEC 509 Seminar course.
'Fast Track' Master's Option
Outstanding undergraduate students have the opportunity for a head start in a Master's program. Qualified students will be permitted to enroll in graduate level courses during their fourth year. These courses will be in addition to any undergraduate requirements and thus can be transferred to the M.Eng. or M.A.Sc. degree programs. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Doctoral (Ph.D.) program is designed to develop the candidate's ability for independent research in one of the thrust areas of ECE. The Ph.D. program consists of a minimum of 6 or 15 units of course work depending on whether the student is admitted with an M.A.Sc. degree or is transferred to a Ph.D. program from an M.A.Sc. program, plus the ELEC 699 Ph.D. Dissertation of 30 units. In addition to the minimum units of course work stated, the Ph.D. program requires 1 unit for the ELEC 609 Seminar course.
MBA + M.Eng. Double Degree (Subject to approval)
The MBA + M.Eng. Double Degree program allows students to complete both degrees in a period of 25 to 29 months. The M.Eng. program is the same as listed above, however 5.5 units of course work can be applied towards the MBA specialization courses. In addition, the M.Eng. and MBA project is done jointly and counts towards both degrees. Students must satisfy the admission requirements for both degrees. Entrepreneurial Engineering Masters Project (EEMP)
Students with strong entrepreneurial and business aspirations who are also interested in a Masters of Applied Science degree can do both in our new entrepreneurial engineering masters project. In this project, students work with industry leaders to create a new company which they will partially own, while earning their Masters degree. Some of the normally required engineering courses are replaced with entrepreneurial business courses. For more information about this project, go to EEMP.
MENG in Telecommunications and Information Security
The MENG in Telecommunications and Information Security program is tailored towards training engineers for careers in the telecommunications and security industries. Students can finish this course-only master program in one year. The program schedule will include mandatory courses in telecommunication and information security areas offered by professors doing active research in these areas and a rich selection of elective courses to accommodate flexibility.
