Graduate Studies at ECE

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers three exciting programs of study leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering, Master of Applied Science and Doctor of Philosophy. The areas of graduate studies at ECE include a) Communication, Signal Processing and Control, b) Computers, Software and Networking, c) Electronics and Energy, d) Electromagnetics and Photonics, and e) Materials and Devices. Under the supervision of world-class faculty, ECE graduate students have the opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research with state-of-the-art computing and laboratory facilities. Graduate students at ECE can also participate in cooperative education as well as work as a research or teaching assistant. What follows is some general information for prospective applicants. Admission Requirements

All applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, including the English language proficiency requirement. Please see details at: http://www.uvic.ca/students/grad/admissions/think/index.php

Admission to our Master's (PhD) degree programs requires completion of an acceptable Bachelor's (Master's) degree in engineering or related fields from an academic institution recognized by the University of Victoria. For graduate program applicants to be acceptable, especially those seeking assistantship, we typically require first-class standing (A-) as determined by our Graduate Admissions office upon review of the application materials. The GRE test is recommended but not required.

Please note that a recommendation for admission by a faculty member who will serve as academic supervisor is required for applicants to gain entry into our graduate programs. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that applicants directly contact by email those ECE faculty members who are in their anticipated research area. Faculty research interests can be found on the department website.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not resided in a designated English-speaking country for three years immediately prior to the entry point applied for, must provide proof of English Language proficiency in the form of a TOEFL or IELTS test score. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international applicants is an overall score of 90 on the Internet Based TOEFL (IBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing sections. The minimum overall IELTS score is band 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band. These minimums must be met to obtain unconditional acceptance.

Financial support for ECE graduate students is usually in the form of a research assistantship paid from faculty's research grants. Additional support in the form of scholarships and fellowships is also available to eligible graduate students. While there is no guarantee, additional funding may be available though teaching assistantships. Students with their own funding will also be considered. How to Apply

In addition to the documents required by Graduate Admission office, including academic transcripts, assessment reports and proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable), applicants to ECE programs should also submit a resume/CV and a statement of research intent (not required for M.Eng.). Graduate applications are considered continuously for the three possible entry points. The following ECE Department application deadlines need to be observed to ensure full evaluation of your application for the desired entry point.

After You Apply

Using your UVic student number, you can check on the status of your application at My UVic Application. In general, the Graduate Admissions office at UVic will review your application for completion and assess it against the admission requirements. Your application will then be forwarded electronically to ECE for viewing by potential academic supervisors. If an academic supervisor is interested in accepting an applicant, ECE department Chair will recommend the applicant for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
